ARKit, Unity
In this tutorial, we’ll get started with the Augmented Reality Unity SDK for Android called ARCore. This includes Markerless World Tracking, Feature Points, and Light Estimation. We’ll walk through how to use the SDK and what is in the example scene and how to easily use it. We will then jump to how the shooting stars are implemented in the introduction as well as the meteor. Last but not least, we will cover how to put your Unity application on device so you can run it for yourself! Lots of information covered in this video! ARKit, Unity
Let’s take a look at the two new augmented reality platforms: ARKit vs ARCore i.e. iOS vs Android. Shown in the comparison are any noticeable differences in tracking speed and quality. In many senses, they are practically identical. They pretty much have the same features which include, feature point detection, plane detection, anchoring virtual objects to the real world, and world positional tracking! As a reminder, both of these videos were taken during their beta and the SDKs are subject to A LOT of improvement. I cannot wait to play with AR some more! keep reading

Creator Chat, Unity, Virtual Reality
Creator Chat #5 dives deep into how to design a Virtual or Augmented Reality (Immersive Tech) for the end user. And what better group to talk about this with than Adam and Iva from The VR Lab! Specifically, we dive into their Audio Visualizer and some of the design decisions that were made because of user testing. We also talk a bit about community building how that is super important for VR to thrive. Really great talking with them and cannot wait to see more! The questions we asked: What was your favorite VR project? What is something your currently working on? What is the best way to start a VR development community? Similarities between the Vive and Pokemon Go? VR and Laziness (Sword Art Online with Brain Computer Interfaces) keep reading

HTC Vive, SteamVR, Unity, Virtual Reality
A while back I saw a really cool type of portal gun on Reddit where items go in one portal and out the other for the HTC Vive (https://gfycat.com/PartialJubilantAfricanpiedkingfisher). Pretty simple to implement, but oh is it ever so satisfying to wield. In this tutorial for SteamVR, we will show you how to simply move objects from one hand to another while maintaining velocity, how to write a neat ripple shader that creates ripples on the portal surface, and controlling that shader to only respond when it gets hit! Build your own virtual augmented reality kitten with augmented reality in Unity 2017!!! We’ll use Apple’s ARKit with iOS 11 and an iPhone 7 to build a demo where you can control a pet cat with a UI joystick, grow and shrink it, and place it on floors. In the process, we’ll build some mechanics you could use for an AR platformer too. Voxel Cat Unity Asset Store Virtual joystick tutorial Github Repo keep reading

This video has been long overdue but the team at Unity has enabled 360 videos (almost natively – we use blender initially) within the editor. This is an update video to a previous 360 video player tutorial we did in the past. This time using Unity’s native video player which will be the official way to do this moving forward as it works with ALL platforms. It is pretty easy to setup and we will show you how to do that and extend it with fun particle effects! Stereoscopic Video Link keep reading

Trying a different approach this week. Instead of building from scratch, we are going to talk about how we built an Ice Climbing prototype and take a suggestion from the audience on what to build on top of this. This prototype was built off of our climbing prototype (with some slight modification). We used the SteamVR Interaction System and and we will highlight the challenges and trade-offs in the design. Get the project on Github! keep reading

With E3 right around the corner and the release of Fallout VR coming soon, we figured we might as well do a tutorial on creating the targeting system VATS. We will cover how to slow down time, highlight body parts, shoot bullets and put our own spin on VATS. We ditch the percentage system in favor of an aim and shoot approach but if you really want percentages, join the stream and chime in – we’ll build the system on the fly! keep reading
