Virtual Reality
Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, AI, and Crypto ( Blockchain ) are all being thrown around as “buzz words” for the future of tech (I promise that is it for buzz words). And in many senses, they will be and we starting to see how they can influence one another. In this video, let’s discuss what decentralization is and how it can impact virtual and augmented reality! We will also discuss 4 upcoming tokens in this space as well as provide resources for you to do you your own research into what is happening the crypto space. Simplygon is a great tool for Unity and Unreal that helps optimize your models especially those made in Google Blocks, Tilt Brush, and even Oculus Medium. It’s core features include decimating the triangles on meshes, creating LODs or levels of detail, as well as merging textures to create optimized texture atlases. While there are some limitations especially for models created in VR, simplygon is a great tool to make your 3D models game ready! Often times, the optimizations are hardly noticeable! Google Blocks 3D Asset from 3Donimus on Poly Simplygon Account keep reading

Livestreams
In this episode, we talk about the ways we can learn from past research in order to improve the future of VR and immersive technology! To discuss this, we have Az Balabanian from ResearchVR, which is a podcast that discusses all the past learnings of VR from academia. This is Part 1 of 2 from our live stream. In this part, we talk about how Az got into VR, some of his learnings from all the papers he has read, and some of his current projects, specifically with 3D scanning and photogrammetry. Lots of knowledge that was shared! Part 2 of our Creator Chat with Az from ResearchVR! In this segment, we follow up with a Q&A from out live audience. Topics include time dilation, brain hacking, and overall discussing how knowledge of the brain can help developers design for VR! This video was recorded during our development live stream. If you want to ask questions, make sure to tune in live! Links: Az Balabanian on Twitter Beautiful Drone Shots Research VR Twitter Research VR Podcasts iTunes keep reading

What if you were Mario in VR ? If you download Unity and try this project out, you can be! In this Unity tutorial, we will show you how this project was setup. Specifically, we will be talking about the SteamVR Interaction, how to get a very fun well animate Hat Throw, and then the teleportation as well some level design tips about the cannon and the flag. Lot of Mario fun ahead so I hope you enjoy! Github Project keep reading

Google ARCore and Samsung Gear VR means we have positional tracking on standalone Android Mobile VR headsets. In this tutorial, we will show you how to use Unity 2017 to combine ARCore and GearVR. This is currently limited to the Samsung S8 on the latest Gear headset, but keep in mind the ARCore is still in beta and should hopefully be introduced to a lot more headsets soon! In this video, we will walk through what you need to do in order to setup ARCore to work with the Gear VR. If you want to try this for yourself, then make sure to grab the Github repo and build it your own phone. Blade Runner 2049 just came out and so what better to celebrate it then by creating it in VR. In this tutorial, we will show you how to build a simple FPS game where you need to have fast reaction times to save humans and kill replicants. We will be using VRTK to bootstrap the development and have a simple FPS game ready to go. Afterwards, it is a matter of making of enemies look different and then having the player respond only to replicants! Github Link keep reading

In this tutorial, we’ll get started with the Augmented Reality Unity SDK for Android called ARCore. This includes Markerless World Tracking, Feature Points, and Light Estimation. We’ll walk through how to use the SDK and what is in the example scene and how to easily use it. We will then jump to how the shooting stars are implemented in the introduction as well as the meteor. Last but not least, we will cover how to put your Unity application on device so you can run it for yourself! Lots of information covered in this video! Let’s take a look at the two new augmented reality platforms: ARKit vs ARCore i.e. iOS vs Android. Shown in the comparison are any noticeable differences in tracking speed and quality. In many senses, they are practically identical. They pretty much have the same features which include, feature point detection, plane detection, anchoring virtual objects to the real world, and world positional tracking! As a reminder, both of these videos were taken during their beta and the SDKs are subject to A LOT of improvement. I cannot wait to play with AR some more! keep reading

Here’s a Unity tutorial using the Gear VR controller to build a first person shooter game in 10 minutes! The controller is almost identical to the Daydream controller. We will be using the VR Samples project provided by Unity and tweaking it to work with the controller using the Oculus Integration that you can also get in the Unity Asset Store. Luckily for us, the basics of the game such as scoring and a timer are already developed for us, so we just need to make it work the controller. We will show you how to get the controller rotation, apply it to any game object like the gun provided in the scene, and other tasks like getting an OSIG and applying the proper scripts to your game objects in Unity 2017!
